Hello, my name is Tatyana Guerra, and I am 18 years old. I am currently a Freshman enrolled at John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a major in Forensic Psychology. However, I am hoping to switch my major or at least minor in Gender studies. My family’s roots trace back to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico and the Banana Republic of Ecuador. I currently live with my two younger siblings: one of the age of seven and the other thirteen, and parent in the forgotten borough of Staten Island, New York. Due to my parents always having full time jobs, I have established a great relationship and am very involved in my siblings' lives.
I am very passionate about giving back to the community so I try my best to join programs and do lots of volunteer work: I am a babysitter, tutor, and teacher's aide, volunteering with foster children and children who live in domestic violence shelters amongst many other things. Because of my service working with children, I am always very moved by any social justice issue involving children. There is nothing more beautiful and fulfilling than giving back to the community. I am currently on the road to recovery from severe depression. I battled with depression for a long two years. It was a long time before I was able to love myself and become a better person again. I think talking about my depression and explaining how big of an impact it had on my life is a big part of who I am today. An outlet for my depression became art; it was a way I could express myself without speaking. A lot of my art has been influenced by street artist, Banksy. Because I am so moved by Banksy’s artwork, I follow Banksy on both Twitter and Instagram. Every so often I check the Banksy website for his most recent art projects. My perfect day would be spent on a tropical island painting all alone. My passion for painting has made me a bit of a hippie. I am a part of the Adelante program; I think it's very important to give back to the community. Being Hispanic, I always want to give back to my people in as many ways as possible and Adelante allows me to do this. My overall goal, academic wise, is to go on to law school and specialize in women's rights. I want to empower women and girls to stand up for equal rights. I want to help women on an international level and have women treated as equals everywhere in the world. I would love to help with protests that help women. |
